November Lacrosse

I write to you from the Towson, MD Sheraton. My daughter and I are here for a weekend of fall lacrosse. You know you've been traveling too much when you try to check-in to your hotel at 1:30am and you're at the wrong hotel. I had the Hunt Valley Delta in my head as where we were staying. Oh well, I'd rather be in Towson anyway! We are right across the street from Pasta Mista and closer to Ocean Pride! It's going to be 42 degrees with 25 mile an hour winds today... If we're lucky and the fields aren't closed as it rained all day yesterday. If you read my blog from last week, you know this November recruiting period is playing out perfectly! Actually though, my buddy A. Hilgy AKA Andrew Hilgartner (Head Coach at McDonough) told me we could use the McDonough turf from 2-3 if everything is cancelled. "So, I...

Ducks in the Rockies

The Munro family is pumped to have our daughter and the Oregon Women's Lacrosse team scrimmaging at the University of Colorado. It's very rare that we get to drive an hour to watch our kids play rather than a cross country flight where we have to make a weekend out of it. Should be a beautiful day and a lot of fun to watch some fall lax! And I can come home and enjoy the same day on a mountain bike this afternoon!

Andy Shay Podcast

Last week my Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with Andy Shay dropped and it's worth the listen. Andy Shay is one of the best guys you could know. He's humble, smart, hard working, loves to joke around, and loves to talk lacrosse. Andy has had amazing success at Yale, but it wasn't always so easy. It took a solid five years to turn the program around...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast

Since I launched my podcasts last May I've had some incredible guests who have described their journey in the sport of lacrosse, told amazing stories, and shared insights on coaching, recruiting, and team building. If you are a coach, this podcast is no-brainer because these guests share incredible info on all aspects of coaching. If you are a parent of an aspiring lacrosse player, you will get in the head of some of the top minds in the game and find out what they value, how they develop players, how they think about recruiting and how they leverage the power of video.

Last week's edition featured Jim Berkman, Head Coach at Salisbury University. If you are a coach, player, or parent this podcast is a MUST listen. You will immediately understand the kind of mindset that allows you to...

Loyola Practice

One of my favorite things to do is attend college lacrosse practices. I love seeing the team spirit, learn new drills, and see the over all tenor of the practice. Watching Loyola's practice yesterday was no exception. It was a day where they warmed up with basic stick work and played 4 quarters of scrimmages, mixing up the teams to get different personnel groupings. At the end of each quarter, the losing team ran across field down and back sprint for time. One thing that was really refreshing was watching Coach Toomey, Coach Van Arsdale and Coach Dwan coach and not over-coach. Coach Toomey was on the off bench sideline where I was watching and he was communicating with the players in the clearing game a bit, but in general there was not much, if any, coach orchestration going on. I never even heard...

Fall is in full swing. Finally the weather is cooling down here in Denver, the Patriots seem to be back on track per their usual October solidification, and fall lacrosse for the Munro family has a lot going on this weekend. My wife went off to Chapel Hill this weekend to watch UNC scrimmage High Point this morning, my oldest daughter and her Ducks team have practice this weekend, and I'm holding down the fort with my youngest as we have no field hockey this weekend which leaves time for a fall ball game today and more importantly a "Street Box" game on Sunday. Early reports from Chapel Hill: new face off guy / late pick up looked good, defense looks athletic and physical, goalies solid, a bunch freshmen look good, shorties look deep, a bunch of key guys didn't play, but the over all depth of the roster was...

Hesitation Moves

Let's talk a little bit about hesitation moves. I'm in the process of putting together instructional videos on skills in men's and women's lacrosse. I'm trying to cover every skill and every variation. There are so many amazing techniques! I am endeavoring to identify each skill variation with the intent of teaching players how to do it all!

Quick thoughts on hesitations: Basketball players use hesitation moves constantly and this should be studied. Whether to get a step, buy time, or looking off the basket after they beat their man freezing shot blockers, there are many different and effective techniques that are 100% applicable to lacrosse. Hesitations make defenders late; on ball defenders, sliders, and 2nd sliders... hesitations make them all late.

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with Patrick McEwen, AKA @LacrosseFilmRoom

Last week I did a podcast with Patrick McEwen, a self made lacrosse expert and it's worth the listen. Most of the learning I did came from the "Lab" of coaching in DI or from others in their own lab. McEwen on the other hand taught himself the game through film and analytics. There are not a lot of people with whom I talk lacrosse that regularly leave me completely perplexed, yet every time I speak with Patrick I invariably am at one point dumbfounded. if you speak with this guy, read is articles, or listen to his podcast, you will be blown away with his knowledge and understanding. He is an engineer at heart with a passion for sports analytics and the sport of lacrosse.

Patrick actually created an algorithm that picked the NCAA...

Watching Lacrosse Video

I've watched a lot of lacrosse in the last 10 days. It's that time again where I need to dive in and watch the best players in the world so I can figure out what they're doing! For men's lacrosse, my focus has been on individual skills so I've watched mostly MLL and Box Lacrosse. For women's lacrosse I'm studying both x's and o's as well as skill, so NCAA lacrosse is perfect for that. My business is Remote Coaching and online education, so collecting video examples of EVERYTHING is the task at hand.

Below are the games I've recently studied:

  • Denver - Dallas MLL Final
  • Dallas - New York MLL Semi-Final
  • Chesapeake.- Denver MLL Semi-Final
  • New York - Chesapeake MLL
  • Dallas - New York MLL
  • Atlanta - Florida MLL
  • Atlanta - Denver MLL
  • UNC - Northwestern Women's NCAA
  • Stony Brook - UPenn...

Mann Cup

Last night I was home alone with only the dog as company so I decided to watch the Mann Cup, which is the Canadian Box Lacrosse National Championship for men. The rosters are full of "who's who" of NLL teams. The Peterborough Lakers representing the East are hosting the Maple Ridge Burrards representing the West in a 7 game series. Game 1 last night was a 2OT thriller with Adam Jones scoring the game winner. Watching that level of play is fascinating to me. I love trying to figure out the nuances of dodging, faking, shooting, feeding etc.

Shawn Evans

With all the stars in that game, the one I enjoyed watching the most was Shawn Evans. This guy is magical when he gets the ball. What Evans does and is common with the best box lacrosse players, is he gets into a dodging...

Minto Cup

The Coquitlam Adanacs won the 2018 Minto Cup. The drama of the week in many ways over shadowed an amazing series between Coquitlam and the Brampton Excelsiors. For those of you who don't know, here's what happened. At the conclusion of Game 1, in which Coquitlam beat Brampton 10-8, Jeff Teat, the best player in Junior A lacrosse and his dad Dan Teat, the Brampton Head Coach were written up for Match Penalties for threatening the officials, which carried a non-appealable 3 game suspension. The next day, 90 minutes before Game 2 face off, ad hoc appeals committee was formed, the non appealable suspension was appealed and Jeff Teat was reinstated 5 minutes before game time. The referees then refused to take the floor and Game 2 was cancelled. All three provincial referee associations stood in...
