Planning For Your Spring Season

The Coaches Training Programs for men's and women's lacrosse are the most comprehensive content you will find on the internet for lacrosse coaches.  Each site is designed to give you all the information you could possibly need around X's and O's, drills, and concepts for every element of the game.

Over the past five years we have produced hundreds of videos and webinars for men's and women's lacrosse on every conceivable topic with many of the top coaches and players in the sport.  Simultaneously, I have been on my own journey of learning and have pioneered the concepts of Principles Based Lacrosse which takes advantage of the Constraints...

Over The Head Checks

A week ago I started a Twitter controversey over this tweet:

Let me explain myself. My point wasn't to disparage current players or imply they're soft.  Nor was it to say lacrosse in the 80's and 90's was better than it is now.  I am well aware of changes in stick technology as it relates to ball security vs stick checks.  And finally, while I do understand why coaches don't like checking in general, I don't subscribe to a reductionist model of coaching, I believe in teaching and creating situational lacrosse.

My point with that Tweet is:  Over The Head (OTH) checks were an important and commonly used tool by many...

The Race Begins When You Say Go

One of my all time favorite quotes about dodging is, "The race begins when you say go!"  from legendary Syracuse Assistant Coach Kevin Donohue.  What this means you should always be able to get a step on your defender because they don't know when you're going to make your move.  In today's blog, I want to explain how you can leverage this concept throughout your entire dodge.  Not only does the race begin when you say go, the race goes where you want to go, the race can stop and start at any time... you get the point!  What you do and when you do it is up to you!  Don't be predictable!  Your defender as...

Attack "At" Dodges

One dodging concept I've been working on with my JM3 Athletes lately is how to neutralize a pole by running right at him with fearlessness and speed.  This is not a new idea.  I was taught to dodge this way in the late 80's and the technique still holds true today!  However, most attackmen don't put this type of pressure on their defender, letting them off the hook!

Watch this compilation of clips from some of the greatest dodging attackmen of the last 20+ years, running right at their man and you'll see what I'm writing about!

If you listen to the Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast I did last week with Andy Shay,...

 Andy Shay Podcast

One of my favorite people to talk lacrosse with is Andy Shay, Head Coach at Yale.  Andy is a learning machine who is always experimenting with new approaches to everything from player development to strength and conditioning, to X's and O's.  Andy is a believer in the Constraints Led Approach to coaching and we talk about this at length in this podcast.  The book the "Talent Code" by Dan Coyle had a profound impact on Andy and his coaching and taught him the concept and importance of creating "Friction" to allow for the central nervous system to adapt to challenges.  We talked a lot about different constraints he uses in practice...

Lacrosse, A Passing Game

One of the trademarks of a good player or a good team is their ability and propensity to move the ball.  To be a great player one must be a great passer.  Being a great passer doesn't just mean being a great feeder, it also means knowing when to move the ball on to the next player for the sake of team offense.  Ball movement is critical to great team offense:

  • spreads the defense out
  • creates difficult approaches
  • Creates new roles and responsibilities
  • Allows the offense to capitalize on advantages
  • Assisted shots score at a higher rate than unassisted shots

One of the biggest struggles most coaches will have when trying to...

Lars Tiffany Podcast

LT and I go way back!  Lars was one year behind me at Brown and we were captains of the 1989 Brown Lacrosse team together.  Our paths have continued to cross throughout our careers as we are both complete lacrosse nerds who can literally talk lacrosse all day!

Podcasts with Lars are a treat for me because he is open to new ideas and is always has interesting stuff to share!  Since I'm always up for learning something new and he's always up for learning something new, our lacrosse conversations are fun!  Another cool thing about LT is that he doesn't hold anything back.  While some coaches are very guarded and careful about what...

 2022 in Review

I apologize that this blog is coming to you a week late, but I was traveling and coaching in Orlando with JM3 National Teams and just couldn't get it done!

2022 was an amazing year on many levels!  It was the 5th and final season for my two older kids, Colin at Georgetown and Emily at ASU.  Both teams had great seasons with very sad finishes!  Georgetown with a heartbreaking loss to Delaware in the first round of the NCAA Tourney as a #2 seed and ASU's epic NCAA Tourney snub!

So just like that, no more trips to DC and no more trips to Tempe.  I have to say I LOVED those trips and I'm going to miss everything about...
