College Lacrosse Recruiting - Highlight Videos

This is the last weekend of November lacrosse and it's almost time to get those highlight videos together!  Highlight videos have always been critical to the recruiting process, and never more than in the remote recruiting Covid world we are  now living in!  Coaches used to spend 95% of their time watching players live with 5% follow up on film whereas in this NCAA Dead Period coaches are watching 100% film and as such they are diving deeper and noticing every detail!

Wow Factor: You're using your highlight video to get coaches to want to see more and you need to "Wow" them!  Keep your vide to 3:00-ish minutes and make it incredible.  If coaches love the way you play, they will dive into your...

 Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast

This week I had a great lacrosse conversation with Northwestern Women's Assistant Coach, Scott Hiller!  Scotty and I came up through the ranks together: he was a 4x All American Attackman at UMass while I was playing at Brown, he coached at Harvard while I coached at Yale,  and we both played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League for the Boston Blazers.  Scotty and I reconnected about 7-8 years ago as I started coaching girls lax and my daughters' teams, and we have kept in close touch over that time with frequent and often epic lacrosse conversations.

This conversation will not disappoint as we touch on his lacrosse journey from men's lacrosse to women's lacrosse, the development of women's lacrosse in terms of rules and stick technology, and some great...

Brian Brecht, Head Coach Rutgers, In this podcast, Brian and I start out talking Rutgers fall ball and how things are pretty normal in NJ!  One super interesting fact, is that at RU they don't count practice on the field in contact tracing!  They contact trace extended in-person contact, within 6 feet, with no masks.  I hope other organizations follow these protocols and realize on the field is not where the virus spreads!

Coach Brecht takes us through his lacrosse journey, the coaches he's had a chance to play for and coach with and what he learned from his mentors.  We talk a lot of Rutgers Lacrosse, how he has built the culture there, and his lacrosse philosophies on defense, offense and transition.  Brian talked about some of his...

Marc Van Arsdale, Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator Loyola: I think you will love this podcast where Marc Van takes us through his incredible lacrosse journey!  His list of coaches he's played or worked for: Jerry Schmidt, Dave Urick, Dick Garber, Scott Nelson, Ace Adams, Dom Starsia and Charley Toomey is insane!  All Hall of Famers or National Champions!  Maybe the only list more impressive is his list of attackmen he's coached: Michael Watson, Doug Knight, Timmy Whitely, Matt Ward, Ben Rebeor, Garret Billings, Connor Gill, Danny Gladding, Steele Stanwick, Zed Williams and Pat Spencer.

Marc says about his attackmen, it's hard to compare, it's like comparing your children, but he did say unequivocally, Pat Spencer was the best he's ever coached!  Marc and I chat at length...

Manhattan Head Coach, Drew Kelleher, This podcast was a blast because Drew Kelleher is one of the best guys in the game.  Sharp and cutting edge, Drew is fun and has a great sense of humor.  We became friends back when he was first at BU, before they even had a team.  He would join us at multiple 3d events where he would recruit and coach and we talked a lot of lacrosse.  I think you will love the conversation around how he teaches dodging.  The ability to draw slides to generate offense is key and in a rebuilding situation like Manhattan, it was critical that they could breakdown match ups.  Listen to the technique Drew teaches!  Click here for the Drew Kelleher podcast!

Kevin Corrigan, Head Coach Notre Dame, KC and I go way back: he has been a friend, a mentor, a competitor, he recruited my son, I spent a summer with his son Will as my intern, and we love to talk lacrosse!  Kevin Corrigan is really smart, well read, and interested in learning as well as sharing.  We kicked off the conversation talking about ND fall ball and how there is a sense of normalcy on campus.  I hope all institutions will follow the leadership of Notre Dame!  The conversation turned to some really cool lacrosse topics including: how to teach the "Full Field" game, the process of understanding, reading, decision making and executing and how this works in riding/clearing, defense / offense and more!  We finish up with a great conversation about recruiting in...

Sean Kirwan, Offensive Coordinator Virginia, is one of the brightest offensive minds in college lacrosse!  This conversation will not disappoint!  We talk about NBA basketball, and how Hostage Dribble  can be an effective counter to a pick defense called Ice!  (I work on "Hostage Dribble" with my JM3 Athletes and it's becoming a game changer!)

We talked a lot of PLL and MLL lacrosse, discussing some of the game's best players and what makes them great!  We finished up the conversation talking about recruiting in the COVID era.  There are a lot of things Sean is looking for in a player, but one of the most important and interesting is a player who can see the field.  He looks for players who know what they're going to do before they get the ball and ID's this...

Mike Boyle and The Secret of Speed Training

Can we all agree that speed is critical!  That you can't be too fast!  It's like being too good looking or too rich.  All over the lacrosse world people are spending time and money on strength and conditioning programs as well as speed training because they know how important it is.

The sad thing is a huge percentage of folks are spinning their wheels and or risking injury with sub par programs and coaching.

Watch this webinar I did with Mike Boyle the other night for my JM3 Athletes and families and you will have the education you need to make great choices for your players on strength and conditioning.
