The Crippler
In my opinion, this shot needs to be in the repertoire of every offensive player! This is a classic Canadian / Native box lacrosse shot that we don't see as often from US players. This shot is tough on goalies because it takes advantage of two types of deception: the deception of "Where" and the deception of "When." Most people think of shooting deceptively in terms of the "Where" for example looking low and shooting high like when...

2man / 3man Offense
Last week I wrote about the Penn State Offense from 2019 which is the most efficient offense in NCAA DI history. The 2man / 3man offense resembles box lacrosse and is similar to the classic Pairs offense where there are a pair of lefties, a pair of righties and two behind. The advantage of the 2man/3man look over "Pairs" is the defense can't slide or "Spike" off one pipe and rotate across on a second slide because there is only one behind and and that X player can sit on the backside pipe making the defense play 5 on 5 in front of the net.
The challenge of the 2man/3man set is the 3man ball side is harder for the offense...

Podcast With Zack Capozzi from LaxReference.com
Analytics in sports was popularized with the success of Billy Beane and the Oakland A's and MoneyBall almost 20 years ago. Lacrosse is way behind in this arena, but thanks to the work of some lacrosse analytics pioneers like Zack Capozzi, we are learning how to use stats to help us understand the game, rate players and teams, as well helping coaches make decisions on team strategy and player development. This podcast will help coaches who don't have full time interns or a math degree learn how to use and understand stats,
Here are some of the topics we discussed

Teaching Deception 2man Game in Women's Lacrosse
The emphasis on Triple A Ratings (Always, Arrive, Alone) for the picker needs to be applied to the dodger as to the same degree. Getting a step on your defender as the dodger or picker through deception and unpredictability in 2man Game is the key ingredient that most coaches are missing as they install the Principles Based Offense and 2man game. The reason 2man game can feel terrible is because the pickers and dodgers are predictable, stagnant, perimeter oriented, and non threatening to the goal. The theory of bringing two players together to create space works when both players are...

JM3 Defensive Philosophy
As a former attackman, I began my coaching career on the offensive side of the ball and and to this day I'm probably best known for offensive innovations, skill development and 2man game. Therefore the assumption would be, the JM3 is model, which is based on Free Play would not be great for defenders. This could not be farther from the truth! In my last season at Yale I was named defensive coordinator and in my first five seasons at Denver I also focused on defense. I hired Jon Torpey in the fall of 2004 and for the next 4-5 seasons we experimented with high pressure...

Deception in 2man Game
A few months ago I had an incredible conversation on a Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast with Alex Sarama, Head Coach of the Italian National Academy and Chief Content Creator for Basketball Immersion, as well as formerly of NBA Europe and he talked about importance of deception in pick setting and how he coined the phrase "Triple A Rating" for pick setting which means Always-Arrive-Alone. Arriving alone simply means the picker must create 2-3 yards of separation from his man when arriving to set a pick.

Integrating Seals In Your Offense
In the Principles Based Offense, Seals are a huge part of the on ball and off ball pick actions. Usually seals involve picking your own man which creates space for a teammate's cut, dodge or shot. Seals are likely to utilized when the defense is sagging in, switching and zoning up picks, exchanges or cuts. The idea is when the defense is packing it in, the offense can pin them in even more! Seals can happen in both on ball and off ball situations and are common in zone offense, EMO and in 6v6 particularly backside when the ball swings through X or over the top. One of the key...

The Belly Out Re-dodge
There are many awesome variations of re-dodges, but the one I'd like to focus on today I call the "Belly out" move. I first noticed this move in a late 90's Princeton at Syracuse game executed by Princeton midfielder and Josh Sims, one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Sims was exceedingly fast and this move is tailored to players who want to re-dodge with speed and not have to slow down. Most re-dodges involve changes of speed and direction with physicality, bounce outs, hesitations, and sharp cuts, whereas this re-dodge is allows the dodger to execute a re-dodge...
