Spring Break San Diego

I write to you from beautiful San Diego where ThunderRidge HS, the girls team I'm helping out with, held spring break training.  It was my first trip to SD for spring break and it was awesome!  The weather, the beaches, the training, the activities were all a great experience!  We got better at lacrosse, got closer as a team, and are primed for the rest of the season!  The girls worked hard for 3 hours per day at practice and then had the rest of the day for activities.  Since we didn't have any games, we were able to work hard and get a lot in!  A barometer I like to use to measure quality practice time is how much shooting do you have time for?  We hammered out 30 minutes per day!  Keeping it fresh made the practices more fun as we introduced and...

Phi-Lacrosse-ophy Podcast

This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Danielle Spencer, Head Coach Dartmouth Women's Lacrosse.  Danielle played and coached at Northwestern, won three National Championships as a player, was an All-American as well as US Team member.  We talk about her playing and coaching journey, her mentors like Northwestern Head Coach Kelly Amonte-Hiller, USC Head Coach Lindsey Munday and Colorado Head Coach Ann Elliott, her philosophy on player development, building the culture at Dartmouth and what it's like to be a first year head coach.

Click Here! It's a great listen!

College Lacrosse Recruiting

One of the topics Danielle Spencer and I covered was recruiting.  She has gotten away from only looking for the biggest, fastest athletes and is looking to fill specific needs...

Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you find it enjoyable!

I'm excited for another great weekend of lacrosse practices, games, activities, coaches meetings aka having beers and talking about lacrosse! It's a chilly day in Denver, but it looks like the snow is going to hold off just long enough for us to get a practice in today with the ThunderRidge HS girls team I'm coaching. We are installing the Joe Spallina Stony Brook Zone Defense today. Fired up!

The Ultimate Player

I remember in the spring of 1989, my senior year at Brown, there was this freshman named Chris Sciani, who was the sickest guitar player. His band played at our fraternity every weekend and he could jam like the Allman Brothers and Guns & Roses! One time I was hanging out with Chris and he had a little cassette tape he carried around in his shirt pocket.  He pulled it out and said, "You...

Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths, about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you find it enjoyable.

I write to you from the Courtyard Marriott in Chapel Hill. I'm here to watch the Tarheels take on the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays today at noon ET. It's 43 degrees and rainy and this is a huge game for both teams. The 'Heels are 3-0 and the 'Jays are 0-2 with their backs against the wall. Should be a great match up! Hopkins has never started a season 0-3 in the history of the program and will give UNC their best game.

Last night I went over to my son's house to watch the second half of the Cornell/Hobart game, which was a high scoring affair. They tried to shut off Teat, but he still had 6-2. I think he has magical powers or something the way shoots, finds the open man, gets out of trouble etc. I did an analysis of Jeff Teat a year ago and he only keeps getting better. Check out the video below.

Afterwards, my...

A Lacrosse Weekend 2.16.19

Welcome to "A Lacrosse Weekend" my weekly compilation of thoughts, ideas, stories, myths, truths about the great game of lacrosse. I hope you enjoy it!

A great lacrosse weekend began yesterday. My daughter, her teammate and I swung by the University of Denver to watch the Louisville Women's practice, which was awesome. Coach Teeter ran some great drills that I am going to steal for my girls high school team involving a ton of two man game concepts. A quick stop at Chipotle, then over to the ThunderRidge high school grass fields to shoot on a former DI men's goalie. We wanted to get some shots in and I needed to film a few things for the JM3 Girls Academy. At 6pm, the head coach of the T'Ridge girls team, Doc Srdoc, came by my house and we watched the Northwestern/Dartmouth game and talked about our upcoming season. Finally, I followed along with the Oregon/San Diego State game through my wife's texts as the Ducks are playing two games in Las Vegas this weekend.

Today's lacrosse on...

Lacrosse Virtual Summit

Wow! What a whirlwind! Such an amazing group of passionate and knowledgeable presenters and a myriad of topics: men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, offense/defense, rides, transition, skills, game breakdowns, youth lacrosse, box lacrosse, analytics, leadership, and business topics!

Here is the list of presenters:

    • TJ Buchanan, Technical Director US Lacrosse: "Small Games that do Big Things", drills, concepts and the science behind why small area games are critical for youth lacrosse.
    • John Paul, Head Coach PLL: "Attacking 10 man ride", if you want to run a 10 man, watch this presentation. JP also hooks us up with a sweet little wrinkle on a deceptive way to "fake" your 10 man and run a match-feet ride that gets your best LSM on a defender carrying it over.
    • Mikey Thompson, Head Coach Christopher Newport...

#LaxCon2019

I write you to this morning from the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott at the US Lacrosse Convention. It's always fun to see so many blasts from the past at this event, to feel the energy of 8000 lacrosse coaches, players, fans, and kids, as well as have the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the game's brightest minds.

There are endless presentations and live demos from pro players, college, HS, and pro coaches, box lacrosse, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse.... it's an extravaganza!

Box on the Field

I will be doing a live demo at 4:45 today showing how to use box lacrosse drills and concepts to teach valuable lessons on the field. I will have a group of 14 year olds who I've never met, but I'm told are pretty good! I will do my best to mobilize the kids quickly and let the drills do the coaching. I...
